Busy weekend.  Yesterday I went to watch Ben swim in a meet in Owensboro.  His times were good, but not good enough to qualify for state, which he really wanted.  You know, I thought after Martie and Jennie were grown, I was through with the pain and anguish that can go with childhood sports, but in a way it is even worse with the grands.  I wanted this for Ben so bad...and seeing Jennie and Brent hurting for him makes the hurt double!!!!  And, yes, I know...it is not that important, but you want your kids and grandkids to have what they want...But...Ben has just started being serious about swimming this year and he IS only ten years old.  He will be fine...as a matter of fact, he forgets it a long time before the rest of us do!   LOL.
Anyway, today Baker was still sick, so I stayed with her while Jen and Brent both went with Ben...he still didn't qualify, but Jen said he came so very close.  At least, that is one weekend they can stay home...and not have to run to a swim meet.  :)

I can tell that this is going to be a weekend "thing."  I still haven't figured out how to work in the cooking blog...everytime I tried to go to annie n kentucky, it would go to that one, so I deleted it...will try to figure it out because I would also like to have a reading one....anyone know what to do?

Worried about Baker and Jen, they have been sick all week.  Jen just called, she has taken Baker to Urgent Care at Madisonville because she just isn't getting better.  There's a lot of stuff going around, including strep and bronchitis...hope it is neither of those.  Prayers for my girls!

Snowing again...this one should pass pretty quickly, though.  I am going to sit tight until it does, though.  I sent this picture to Kim and Denise...didn't think they would believe me!
LOL...I didn't realize a little leprachaun was peeking in one corner and Jake in the other!  We are having a Mardi Gras potluck in the library today, so I hope I can make it to school.  I made some Hello Dollies, and a Black-Eyed Pea Gumbo (taste-tested it last night...yummy!).

February 21, 2010 pm edition

Barry and I went to a new church this morning...The Journey.  They meet at the Merle Travis Center, which is a really nice place.  We both liked the message, but Barry misses his traditional Baptist service.  I would like to give it a chance, though, the pastor is very knowledgable and educated about the Bible.  He talked about small groups today, and sitting in straight rows...made a lot of sense.
Later we went for lunch at Cracker Barrel in Madisonville.  Nice.
And I heard from Ben that he improved all his times, but still hasn't qualified for State...missed in three or four events by only one second!  I think next week he will do it!  GO, BEN!

February 21, 2010

Yep....I messed up...haven't been writing for a few days.  For one thing, we had school three days in a ROW!  I think next week will be the first full week of school for us since Christmas break.  Anyway, I was bushed each day after school.  Yesterday I went to see Mama...she is doing good.  I wish I could see her more often, although every time she goes somewhere it throws her off.  She says she feels lost, and I can certainly imagine that she does.  For the first time in over 80 years, she probably feels her life is without purpose.  She says all she does is watch tv...I asked her if she reads and she said yes, she did do that.  It was so pretty outside, I tried to get her to go out, but she said she didn't want to.  Maybe I can get her out once Spring really gets here.  I took some pictures of her and Chrissy, her cat...

After I left BG, I went to check on Daddy's grave and left a UK flag flying.  The way UK played yesterday against Vandy, though, he might be wanting it off by now!!!!

February 17, 2010

Back to school today.  We were on an hour delay, so that made the day whiz right on by.  Making up these days we have missed are going to be a headache, though.

The day was pretty typical...book circulations, clubs meeting since it is Wednesday, a supply order to be checked in, just everyday stuff.  I watched Tabatha's class while she went to the doctor, but only last period....they knew what to do and gave me no problems.

Good to see all the girls again...although Denise and I do a lot of texting, it is fun to laugh with everyone in person.

February 16, 2010

Wow, I am impressing myself.....how many days straight have I written?  More than ever before, that's for sure.
Nice day off today.  Slept in, took Ben, Baker, and Brent lunch from McDonald's...Jen didn't want any, she took soup for her lunch.  Any ole excuse to see them!  Browsed Walmart for an hour or so, then home to piddle around, watch some Olympics, etc. Reheated the jambalaya for our supper, better the second time around type of food!  Switched out printers to one that Martie had that is compatible with Vista.   I am going to make some snickerdoodles in a minute, if I can find my recipe...if not, I am sure allrecipes will have it.
Still didn't do any scrapbooking.

February 15. 2010

Well, our summer break is moving along nicely.  If we have to make up each day, we will be in school til time to start school!
Lazy day for me...didn't try any new recipes.  Didn't do much of anything actually.  I took a couple of pictures of the pretty bluebird and robin in the rhododendron outside and some cute ones of the cats...then mostly read, ate, and napped.  I really really think I was a bear in another life.

Look at that pretty bluebird!

February 14, 2010

Valentine's Day...or Valentimes as we used to say.  Baker spent the night and  was up bright and early ready to playJen came pretty early and picked her up so we didn't get to play too long.  I spent most of the rest of the day just piddling here and there, trying a new recipe...playing scrabble online and napping.  Nice way to spend a dreary day.  Talked to Mama, I wish I could see her more often, but it is not easy to get up there with all the bad weather.  Talked with Martie and Alisara via Skype, I LOVE Skype!

February 13, 2010

Bakerboo visited this afternoon while Jen took Ben and his friends to see "The Lightning Thief" at Owensboro. This was Ben's late birthday celebration....last year he had to postpone because of the ice storm! Anyway, Baker and I had a huge time. We played, and sang, and tried to make jibjab Valentines, but apparently so was everyone else in this hemisphere, so we weren't successful with that. We did get to video talk with Martie and Alisara, so that was fun. Baker made faces in the camera while the rest of us talked, then Martie would make a face and she would try to copy it and vice versa. Martie and Baker are pretty much two-of-a-kind.

Also, Baker opened her Valentine gifts from Bear and me, so we could watch her enjoy them....

She got a zhu zhu hamster and some fancy schmancy dresses for her Barbie...also in this picture (if I uploaded the right one) she got a Jonas Brothers card (her boyfriends!).

Now I will try to upload one with her face showing! LOL
Okay, not exactly where I wanted them positioned, but I guess I can't be picky.

After shopping at Kroger for snowbound food (you know....Princess fruit snacks, Jello Chocolate pudding--which Baker calls brown jello---, cocoa, marshmallows, chips ahoy, cinnamon toast cereal, etc.), we joined Bear at Phillies for lunch...Baker had a loaded baked potato, Bear had butterfly shrimp, and I had chili. Very good. Then we came home and Baker watched one of the two movies we got at Movie Gallery...Polly Pocket...the other one was Bratz. It was getting late and Jen hadn't come by, so I called and asked if Baker could spend the night because her eyes were getting very droopy. Once she went to sleep, she was out for the night. Love to watch them both sleeping...their innocence really glows then.

February 9, 2010...pm edition

A picture of new snow that started late this afternoon....

“There’s one good thing about snow, it makes your lawn look as nice as your neighbor’s.”
― Clyde Moore

I will have to put a picture of our new snowfall in after I change from my pj's. And I am only half finished with my coffee! It is a beautiful wet snow that will be great for snowballs and snowmen, so I hope Jen feels better this morning, or that Brent will be able to take the kids out!

I just told someone that it looks like a two-days-off snow...that is how teachers measure snowfall.

Snow

Now why would you play hooky today, you know school will probably be out the rest of the week? I was wondering why I didnt get a reply from my email to you today (I sent you a picture of Jayren playing dress up). Hopefully, we will still get to go to South Carolina Thursday morning, looking forward to getting to a little warmer weather at the beaches.

Mama is doing good today. I think Michael is planning on doing an interview with her sometime soon. He will probably film it and have Dee ask her questions about her growing up.

The snow is really coming down now, I think we already probably have 2-3 inches....geez...stop already.

Monday, February 8, 2010

Played hooky today...well, not really...been having sinus problems so I thought I had better see a doctor if possible. Funny, though, I called and Mae said, "Can you come right now?" I said, "Can I take a shower?" She said, "No, come right now!" So, I splashed my face, sniffed under my arms, brushed my teeth and took off....cat-furred sweats and all. She told me later that they had had two no-shows and otherwise they were booked solid the rest of the day. I will just make sure I have had a shower before I call the office again...LOL.

Kind of got on my soap box in the doctor's office. After she diagnosed (sinus infection) and prescribed (shot, antibiotic and new antihistamine), she asked my opinion about reading instruction. Her son is in the last part of kindergarten and not receiving enough reading instruction, in her opinion. Come to find out, this school does Accelerated Reading in KINDERGARTEN!!!!! Whoa...here I come. I gave her my theory...that AR is meant only as a motivator and a whole lot of teachers, in their crunch for test scores, etc. are using it as a strategy and/or program. I think AR is NOT meant for lower grades...should not, as a matter of fact, be used until about 5th grade, when interest in reading is waning in some students. She and I talked for about 20 minutes and I hope I gave her some constructive feedback on what to do about her son.

The shot is kicking in, feeling some better...of course, about four naps with the cats today helped, too.

Slow morning...beautiful sunshine outside, though. About 20 degrees, went to feed Andy and get the newspaper and was really glad I had bundled up! I caught a cute photo op of the cats...they were watching a flock of birds in our back yard! They kind of resemble me from the back!!!!! All that whipped cream, I guess.

Welcome to my life....

Growing tired of Facebook, I decided it was time to do my own thing. Having a "friend" for every day of the year is NOT my thing. I love my friends, but most of my real-life friends aren't even on FB, so what's the point? No, I mainly subscribed to FB to keep in touch with my family...children, sisters, brother-in-law, nieces, nephews, greats and grands, cousins, etc. Yes, there are a lot, but I really WANT to hear about their lives. Therefore, a blog is born...as my grandson, Ben, would say, "Ta dah!"

Of course, there are many other subjects I want to discuss besides family: books, cooking, animals, scrapbooking, gardening, etc....so I hope my blog will attract some of those new-fangled friends out in cyber space, too.

Some days I will have pictures or videos to post, some I will not. Today, I am posting a picture of Ben, waiting to go into the last basketball game of the season.
